Meet Tara

When choosing instructors, we look for a love of teaching, experience and achievement in the chosen medium, and a reassuring presence. I took Tara Dickinson's class and knew immediately she exemplified each of those qualities and more. So to start us off, we have invited Tara for a perfect Thanksgiving warm up with Fall Watercolors. Here is more about Tara, in her own words:

Q&A

What is special about watercolor, compared to other media?

Watercolor is a transparent medium, which means that the white of the paper is used to create highlights, and the colors are layered to create depth and luminosity. Watercolor has an element of spontaneity as well as a fluid quality that allows for a more loose painting style if desired.

If someone is interested in art but hasn't quite made the leap, what would you say to encourage them?

Make art for the simple pleasure of it. If you can put pen or brush to paper, you are an artist! I love this quote from Kurt Vonnegut: "To practice any art, no matter how well or badly, is a way to make your soul grow. So do it.”

Where do you go in Sonoma County to get inspired? To relax and take a break?

We are surrounded by an overabundance of artists in this county! I get inspired during the Art TrailsOpen Studios, gallery showings, and museums. I love the First Fridays in the SOFA art district in Santa Rosa. After growing up in flat Florida, Northern California's natural beauty inspires me every single day. I relax and recharge at the ocean and in the presence of the magical redwoods.
